Your insurance plan may cover nutrition counseling!
I am currently in network with many BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) and United Healthcare (UHC) plans. In-network coverage depends on your specific insurance plan and state. I will bill your insurance for you, however, you are responsible to know and understand your benefits. You may have a deductible, copay, or co-insurance that is due out of pocket even if I am considered in-network. If you do not have BCBS or UHC, I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement upon request. You may also be able to use your HSA card, but always confirm with them that this is a covered service. If you have any questions or concerns with insurance coverage verification please reach out and I’ll do my best to help you.
Here are the steps to take to find out what is covered:
Get out a piece of paper or spot to take down notes .
Call the customer service number on the front or back of your insurance card. Or there may be an option to verify via a chat with a customer service agent with some insurance plans.
Ask if Amanda Wagner or Amanda Wagner Nutrition PLLC is considered an in-network provider. You may need my NPI number for this and I can provide it for you. Tell them I am a Registered Dietitian.
Ask if telehealth is considered a covered service with your insurance plan. If yes, ask about the following CPT codes: 97802 and 97803. If those are not covered you can also ask about 99401, 99402, 99403, and 99404.
Ask if your plan covers PREVENTATIVE nutrition counseling. This means nutrition counseling without a doctor’s referral needed. Provide them with ICD codes Z71.3 or Z72.4 if they ask what codes you are referring to. This may also include codes such as: Z82.49, Z83.3, Z83.42, and Z13.220.
If preventative nutrition counseling is not covered, ask about the coverage for Medical Nutrition Therapy and if a doctor’s referral is needed. There are a lot of ICD-10 codes that may be covered, so ask them to share any codes that are covered by your plan and if a referral is needed. If a referral is needed we cannot work together until I get this referral your healthcare provider.
Ask if you have a deductible that needs to be met. Some insurance plans require you to pay a certain amount out-of-pocket before insurance coverage will kick in. If they say yes, ask how close you to meeting that amount.
Ask if you plan has a visit limit or any other limitations. Some plans will covered an unlimited number of sessions and some will have a limit of a specific amount of sessions per calendar year.
